The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists — Founded in 1951 in Chicago, Illinois, ACOG has over 52,000 members and is the nation’s leading group of professionals providing health care for women. The site has patient information booklets on most topics in gynecology, many are available in languages other than English.

The North American Menopause Society —NAMS is the leading nonprofit scientific organization devoted to promoting women’s health and quality of life through an understanding of menopause. They have up-to-date information for women regarding interpretations of the latest studies in menopause by experts in the specialty.

American Heart Association — A national voluntary health agency whose mission is: “Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke,” the association’s goal is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent by 2010.

FamilyDoctor.org — A Web site operated by the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), a national medical organization representing more than 93,700 family physicians, family practice residents and medical students. All of the the site’s information has been written and reviewed by physicians and patient education professionals at the AAFP.

MayoClinic.com — Mayo Clinic is a not-for-profit medical practice dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of virtually every type of complex illness. Their site has useful and up-to-date health information in more than 35 disease and lifestyle categories.

National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine — NCCAM is the Federal Government’s lead agency for scientific research on complementary and alternative medicine. They have updates on new information about non-prescription alternatives.

Women’s Health Initiative — The WHI was a major 15-year research program to address the most common causes of death, disability and poor quality of life in postmenopausal women — cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. Updates regarding additional articles interpreting these important studies are available on this site.

National Institutes of Health — Part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the NIH is the primary Federal agency for conducting and supporting medical research. NIH scientists investigate ways to prevent disease as well as the causes, treatments, and even cures for common and rare diseases. The NIH have health updates for patients and recommendations for screening tests based upon the latest studies.

HeartHub for Patients — HeartHub is the American Heart Association’s patient portal for information, tools and resources about cardiovascular disease and stroke. HeartHub also has helpful questionnaires that can be used to help an individual estimate their own risk of heart attack or stroke.

Sex and a Healthier You — A joint project between the National Women’s Health Resource Center and the Association of Reproductive Health Professionals, Sex and a Healthier You seeks to provide accurate information and advance positive sexual health messages by raising awareness about sexual function as a natural and valued aspect of women’s lives.

American Association of Retired Persons — Founded in 1958, AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization that helps people 50 and over improve the quality of their lives.

American Sleep Apnea Association — The ASAA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing injury, disability, and death from sleep apnea and to enhancing the well-being of those affected by this common disorder.

National Sleep Foundation  The NSF is an independent nonprofit organization dedicated to improving public health and safety by achieving understanding of sleep and sleep disorders, and by supporting sleep-related education, research, and advocacy.

International Osteoporosis Foundation — The IOF is the largest global non-governmental organization dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis. This site contains the FRAX tool, an interactive tool that can help each individual predict their risk of breaking a bone in the next ten years.

National Osteoporosis Foundation — Established in 1984, the NOF is the nation’s leading voluntary health organization solely dedicated to osteoporosis and bone health.

World Health Organization — WHO is the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system. It is responsible for providing leadership on global health matters, shaping the health research agenda, setting norms and standards, articulating evidence-based policy options, providing technical support to countries and monitoring and assessing health trends.

Prevention magazine — As one of America’s leading health publications, Prevention is devoted to informing readers about smart ways to live well. Top experts offer advice on weight loss, fitness and nutrition that will help you better manage your health and enhance the way you feel about yourself and your life.

American Cancer Society — The American Cancer Society is a nationwide, community-based voluntary health organization. Headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, the ACS has state divisions and more than 3,400 local offices.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute — Since its founding in 1947, Dana-Farber has been committed to providing cancer patients with the best treatment available today while developing tomorrow’s cures through cutting-edge research. The site has updates about screening for cancer and new treatments as well as clinical trials to test new medications that are being developed.

National Cancer Institute — The NCI, established under the National Cancer Institute Act of 1937, is the Federal Government’s principal agency for cancer research and training.

Surgeon General’s Family Health History Initiative — To help focus attention on the importance of family history, the Surgeon General, in cooperation with other agencies with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has launched a national public health campaign, called the Surgeon General’s Family History Initiative, to encourage all American families to learn more about their family health history. The site has a tool that individuals may use to track their pertinent family health history.

Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine — Founded in 1985, PCRM is a nonprofit organization supported by physicians and laypersons who receive Good Medicine each quarter. PCRM programs combine the efforts of medical experts and grassroots individuals. Their site has up-to-date information on vegetarian nutrition.
